“Night Gap” Press release
In 2017 a passenger flight was seconds from flying into four fully loaded passenger aircraft at San Francisco Airport. If this aviation accident had occurred, it would have been one of the worst in history. Due to good visibility this July night the aircraft's automatic landing system was shut off and the pilot prepared for a manual landing. The pilot thought he was flying towards the runway, but in reality he was heading for the taxiway. At approx. 55 m from the ground the tower called to abort the landing. At its lowest, it was 4.5 meters between the plane and the aircrafts on the ground.
Through painting, Nils Elvebakk Skalegård interprets the moment as the pilot realizes that he will fly into these planes. The paintings deal with the incident as seen from the pilot's inner world.
